Leather is an amazing natural product, it has been used by man since the dawn of time, and the skills and techniques used to convert a skin from a raw hide to a stable high performance material have changed very little over the years. Depending upon the animal it came from, and the way it was processed by the tanner, leather can be hard enough to make into armor that will resist sword blows, or soft and flexible enough to make ladies gloves as fine as silk. Tanning preserves, and “fixes” the desirable properties of the skin, and stops the processes of decay, Leather items have survived from Viking, and ancient Egyptian times. A piece of leather behaves in different ways, depending upon which part of the animal it came from and how it tanned. Like most leather craftsmen we don’t often buy full hides, instead we buy the parts of the hide that is best suited to the job in hand. The shoulder and back gives the best, (and most expensive) leather for belts, handbags etc, and the (cheaper) belly leather is used for low value goods such as key rings. Cow hide is most commonly used for hand work, but pig, Ostrich, Shark, and Snakeskin can be used for more exotic projects. We are fortunate enough to have several leather merchants within easy reach, so we have access to a wide choice of leathers. Company ProfileYorkshire-Leathercraft is a small company specializing in custom made, and small batch leather work, at realistic prices. We aim to please, and offer real discounts for bulk orders. We are happy to quote to your specific design, or modify our existing product range to your needs. This is a new site very much under construction, Products will be added over time (as I learn how to do it), and when I get round to it. In the meantime, if you have any questions or any specific requirements contact me. This site has no "Mission Statement"! Life is too short! Leather is a natural substance and there may be slight variations in in thickness of material, and leather sometimes may be subject to shrinking or stretching, so all dimensions are approximate. I try to make sure that the information appearing on this Site is accurate and up-to-date. However, errors and omissions do occur and the user should not take the accuracy of the information for granted. If you are in any doubt you should check directly with me. It is imposable for me to have reviewed all pages of the sites that are linked to this Site therefore I cannot be liable for their content. Users link to other sites at their own risk
Contact InformationWe can be contacted by e-mail, phone or snail mail, and I am happy to give generalized quotes to initial enquiries, although formal terms will be agreed before a commission is accepted. As a small one man and a dog company we operate on a strictly "cash with order" basis.
